Introduction : In the footsteps of Renart, along the Vuachère.

The Vuachère is a small Lausanne river which crosses the city from the heights of Lausanne, to the lake, into which she throws herself. It is visible in several places in town. These places are real little green pockets in the heart of Lausanne. The City of Lausanne has also created an educational trail that runs along the river.

It is on this journey that Nicole and Laurence take you, in the footsteps of Renart, through stories taken from the Roman de Renart, a novel written between 1175 and 1250 A.D.

The heroes of this novel are : Sire Renart, the most cunning pin, the most deceitful of all furry and feathered animals. It is also this character who gave his name to the word fox that we know today.. He is the hero of our stories. And here is Sir Ysengrin the Wolf, Renart's brave uncle, his friend… then his sworn enemy. And here is His Majesty the Noble King the Lion and his great lords : Brown the Bear, Thybert the Cat, Grimbert the Badger, Tiécelin the Raven and Chantecler the Rooster and many others. Among humans, there is Lord Constant, a priest, merchants and a forest ranger…

Through these characters, it is the entire medieval society that is depicted and mocked. However, this novel has spanned the ages, due to the fact that 400 years later, the famous poet Jean de la Fontaine will take up some of these stories in his fables, by adding a moral to them. He will thus escape the formidable censorship of Louis XIV.

Renart plays bad tricks on all the animals in the forest. He makes so many enemies that he will end up being judged. How did Renart get away with it? ?
